UPS ble grunnlagt i Seattle USA i 1907 av en mann ved navn Jim Casey og kompisen hans Claude Ryan som var med som ansatt fra starten av. Disse to fikk 100 dollar i lån som de brukte på telefoner og diverse små utstyr som de trenge til å opprette firmaet. I starten løp de rundt med brev, pakker og små meldinger siden ikke alle hadde telefon denne gangen. Det var en stor fordel for dem at Seattle var en vel etablert by med flere gode bedrifter. Allerede i starten så merket folk og bedrifter seg den gode kundeservicen som firmaet er verdens kjent for i dag.
UPS er i dag blitt verdens største budfirma. UPS har i dag egne fly, biler, båter, lastebiler og droner. Omsetningen er på 54 Milliarder dollar i 2017.

1975 åpnet UPS opp I Toronto Canada. I 1989 kjøpte UPS opp en britisk frakt firma ved navn IML. Så i løpet av natten hadde de utvidet firmaet til også kunne levere I Europa. I samme år hadde UPS utvidet sin virksomhet til Afrika og Midtøsten.
